What Is Zumba Fitness?

Zumba is a wild, Latin-inspired dance workout that’s currently setting the nation on fire.  It combines high-intensity resistance training with beats and dance styles from all over the world.  Led by trainer “Beto” Perez and his assistant Giselle, the program teaches you to dance your way to better health.  It’s a rigorous exercise, but it starts easy so that you can ease into it.  But exactly what is Zumba and how does it work?

The whole program revolves around various dance styles that are turned into aerobic exercise routines.  The styles include mamba, samba, merengue, tango, flamenco and also non-Latin styles like hip-hop, reggae and even American rock and roll.  They have taken these styles and worked them into an interval training program.  This means that you work out hard for a short period, and then you have a short period of rest.  Then, repeat.

Success With Zumba – Calories Burned

High-intensity interval training burns calories much faster than either low-intensity or aerobic exercise.  It is the repetition and the short periods of rest that take off the calories.  Studies show that you burn them twice as fast with interval training than with low intensity exercise.

Working Out With Zumba – Weight Loss

Since Zumba is an excellent cardio-vascular workout, it also helps you to lose weight.  You are continually shifting, dancing and stepping, and this constant activity sheds the pounds.  There are also weights that are used to help you build lean muscle.  With leaner muscle, the carbs you eat will go to developing muscle tissue instead of fat.  Interval training has also been shown to speed up your metabolism even hours after your workout is over.

Zumba adds even more to interval training by turning your exercise routine into a dance party.  It started with classes led by Perez which soon spread across the country.  Now, there are Zumba DVDs, CDs and even games for Wii that allow you to practice at home.

Customer reviews all over the internet show that Zumba produces great results.  People who have tried the dance routine overwhelmingly praise it, many claiming that it’s “addictive.”  Considering how hard it is for most of us to get into an exercise routine, this is really beneficial.  The DVD and CD sets are especially nice because you can Zumba in the comforts of your own home.  For best results, you should still make sure you’re getting a balanced diet as well.

Although Zumba is quite rigorous, it starts with a beginner level and teaches you to Zumba in steps.  However be warned: Nearly everyone who tries the beginner levels, gets hooked quickly! Zumba is perfect for anyone that is looking for a fun way to work out.
